Hello Readers,
From the moment I picked up Death of a Bookseller, I was totally hooked. Alice’s writing grabs you and doesn’t let go, leaving you thinking about it long after you've finished. It’s one of those books that stays with you for days.

The story alternates between the perspectives of Roach and Laura. At first, I wasn’t sure if Laura’s chapters could hold up to Roach’s sharp, cynical voice, but as the story goes on, Laura’s perspective adds a lot of depth and complexity to the plot, enriching the whole experience.
Roach, a bit of a loner, is obsessed with true crime particularly serial killers. She’s been working at a struggling Spines bookshop since she was a teenager. Laura, on the other hand, is warm, stylish, and friendly. When Roach discovers that Laura shares her dark fascination with true crime and even writes poetry with similar themes, she starts imagining a friendship. But as the two women clash over the ethics of true crime, things start to fall apart between them.
The bookshop itself is such a key part of the story. It’s cosy but a little rundown, and Alice describes it in such detail that it feels like a character. As a book lover, I really appreciated how the setting complements the dark tone of the story.
This is a tale about messy characters, dark humour, and how something that begins as a simple connection can easily spiral into obsession. The plot moves slowly at times, but the tension is always building, and the twists keep you on edge. It’s definitely a slow burn, but it’s worth it as the suspense continues to build.
The alternating first-person chapters let you dive deep into Roach and Laura’s heads. As their perceptions of each other shift, you start to feel more and more distant from both characters, adding to the unsettling atmosphere. The themes of obsession and moral boundaries are well-executed, making you reflect on the ethics of true crime.
From the captivating characters to the atmospheric setting and the dark, obsessive plot, it had me hooked from the very first page. This book isn’t just a story it’s an experience that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page. If you’re looking for a gripping read that will stay with you, this is it.
