Hello Readers,
I was looking on Netflix for something to watch and I came
across Supacell and obviously binged all 6 episodes. I know the superhero genre
has been flooded in recent years, but I think Supacell has a fresh take on the
superhero genre.
I am using a poster image I have found through google I do
not own any rights and am using the image purely for future review purposes
(Fair use under the copyright act sections 29 and 30 under use for a review).
The show uses South London as its setting creating a
diverse, and brilliant background while five everyday normal Londoners who
suddenly gain superpowers. Not only do they need to focus on how to navigate their
new powers but also confront personal challenges and the emerging threats
around them.
I think what makes Supacell feel unique is that it feels grounded
in reality as it has realistic portrayal of working-class London and showcasing
everything in the gritty details. While the series has the super power element
under that there are themes of racial profiling, social injustice, and
community dynamics, which adds great depth to its superhero narrative.
There is a little bread crumb trail that is sprinkled
through season one and I hope it gets explored more in season two. May the odds
be in the out favour with the Netflix Gods. I have seen people critiquing that
the plot is slow due to the number of characters and subplots.
I have to disagree; one of my favourite aspects of Supacell
is that, despite gaining superpowers, each of the five main characters
continues to face real-world challenges and life doesn’t stop because you have
gained superpowers. The only outright spoiler I will give is pay attention this
series is so beautifully interlinked it’s a masterpiece.
Supacell delivers superheroes without the clichés there
are no masks or capes just “real people” you can genuinely root for. Do I
always agree with the characters’ choices? Not at all. But I can understand the
motivations behind them, and that makes them all the more relatable.
