Better than the Movies by Lynn Painter Review

Hello Readers,

Better than the Movies has been sat on my type up this review pile for a while. I loved this book and it was a little hard to write this review without it sounding like I giant love letter to Lynn. I think I read this book at the right time I love a good romcom and this book just hit it out the park for me.
I loved this delightful young adult romcom as this book felt like love letter to romcoms.

The story is filled to the brim with references to iconic movies such as “10 things I hate about you” and I hit me right in the feels. In this book we follow Liz a hopeless romantic who has always dreamed of her life playing out like the perfect rom-com. I mean we’ve all been there.

Liz is fascinated with her childhood crush, Michael as she believes he’s her ideal leading man. In true romcom style she has decide that she is going to try gain his attention and by enlisting the help of her neighbour, Wes. In the same romcom vein Liz begins to question if her perfect fantasy idea of love might not align with her original plans as she has growing feelings for Wes. With that cat out the bag I would just like to say the slow-burn romance between Liz and Wes was absolutely worth the wait.

I loved how Lynn’s writing was light-hearted and kept cheerful tone throughout that made the book hard to put down. I think I am in my banter era as once again I love the humour and banter between all of the characters as they made the story feel a little more relatable.

I thought it was great how through to book Lynn delves into themes of self-discovery, grief, and expectations versus reality. But in a way that celebrates the messy, imperfect nature of life and relationships, without feeling like the characters are being ridiculed.

This is a must read for any romcom fan and pop back tomorrow to see my review of book two Nothing Like the Movies.
