Say Her Name by Juno Dawson Review

Happy Halloween Readers,

I am a sucker for the Legend of Bloody Mary and this book was the perfect companion for the legend.

Like most people in their thirties, I grew up with the Legend of Bloody Mary and I have reread this book every spooky season since 2019 (I think). What I love about Say Her Name is that it isn’t just a retelling of the myth as we learn the back-story along with the characters through the ways Mary appears to them as you follow them along with their investigation as they put the pieces of Mary's past together.

It doesn’t matter how many times I have reread this book it still gives me the creeps.  Say Her Name pretty much has everything I love in good horror stories held within its pages. The atmosphere is dark and palpable and it effortless brings the story to life. By the end of the book despite it tying up all the loose ends nicely it makes you second guess everything you just read.

The three main characters Bobbie, Naya and Caine were extremely likeable although they have their eye rolling moments. Such as when they say her name in front of a mirror then they all giggled and make fun of the situation. They are just begging for Bloody Mary to Samara herself out the mirror. You just know it’s not going to end well. I liked them all, but I find myself slightly liking Bobbie more as I think I would have acted and reacted the same way.

This is the perfect read for the spooky season it has a terrifying ghost, funny moments, running around to save your life, and a little sprinkle of romance thrown into the mix.

Stay Spooky
