Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron Review

Hello readers,
Since reading “Cinderella is Dead” Kalynn has been an auto buy author for me and she never disappoints. As much as I loved “You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight” and “This Poison Heart series” (To Review). I was so excited for Sleep Like Death because I couldn’t wait to return to fairy tales with Kalynn. This time Kalynn is retelling the story of Snow White.

Once again Kalynn manages to weave her writing magic into another wonderful fantasy world where she took the well-known elements of Snow White. To create a different story in the same vein of the orginal story. Also, slight spoiler but how Kalynn managed to intwine the story of Snow White with another fairy-tale was a brilliant twist I did see coming. No spoilers here.

Eve is a strong and determined heroine on a mission. The main difference between this and the orginal retelling is that Eve’s character was strong and incredibly talented with a touch of magic. I know we know the orginal story but without spoilers how this story intensifies after Eve witnesses her mother, exhibiting bizarre behaviour in her chambers was masterfully done.

This book is filled with a darker undertone than some YA stories and I love it when fairy tales lean into their darker roots. The pacing of Sleep Like Death was phenomenal and it had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter. It was almost like I couldn’t read this book quick enough.

I adored the cast of characters Kalynn created as they somehow felt familiar but also new. There are the familiar characters we all know such as the Huntress, the Queen but the twist on the seven dwarves is wonderful. I appreciated the references to the original fairy-tale hidden throughout the story.

One of my biggest takeaways from this book is that there are hints to other fairy tales in the same world. Which I hope means there will be more books set in this world. If you like retellings of classic fairy tales told in twisted ways, this book is for you.
