Hello Readers,
If you have read my previous game reviews of
Dungeon Keeper
and
Dungeon Keeper 2 you might have seen how much I loved these games and how I
grew up playing them. Dungeon Keeper 3 was rumoured to be in development before
EA took over Bullfrog and the game was forgotten. I remember being told this or
I am victim to the rumour mill. I did try play the Dungeons 1 and 2 but I prefer
three for me it feel closer to Dungeon Keeper. I have no rights to the poster image used(Fair use under the copyright act sections 29 and 30 under use for a review).

Plot Summary:After conquering the lands above, the Dungeon Lord becomes
bored and attempts to invade a new continent which fails due to the minions'
incompetence in boat-building. The Dungeon Lord casts a spell that allows him
to control Thalya, awakening her evil side. After she slaughters the people in
her home village, she decides to let her dark side take over and begins serving
the Dungeon Lord as its chief lieutenant in her quest to punish Tanos for
attempting to convert her.
On this quest, Thalya gradually conquers more and more parts
of the continent and dispatches of Tanos' friends one by one. Facing Tanos
himself, she fails to defeat him and uses a spell to temporarily transport the
Dungeon Lord to the continent where he battles with Tanos who then flees and
becomes more fanatic in his attempts to destroy Thalya and her forces,
sacrificing his own cities and people and calling upon dead heroes from Valhalla to
fight for him instead. In the end, Thalya manages to defeat Tanos and subjugate
the empire under the Dungeon Lord's will.
Review
I am sorry now I will be comparing this game to The Dungeon
Keeper series as it’s what I know best.
This
game borrows a fair amount from The Dungeon Keeper series as the dungeon part
plays and feel like a simpler Dungeon Keeper, but you have the bonus of getting
surprises both good and bad when exploring the dungeon.
However, one of the big differences is that we can now go to
the overworld where the gameplay changes to real-time strategy. I loved this
change as it made the gameplay feel a little less cumbersome and now as the
player you have more choice on how you wanted to approach the missions.
This might just be a me thing and user error, but it did
take a hot second to get used to the slight control change between the dungeon
and overworld. In the dungeon you can collected all your creatures by hitting F2
and you drop them. While on the overworld you can no longer pick up your
creatures, but now you can drag-select and right-click to guide them. You also can’t
build on the overworld.
Instead of your creatures joining your army through a portal
like Dungeon Keeper, In Dungeons 3 you hire them directly, but this costs gold.
Just like Dungeon Keeper the army will require a wage and have other demands
for their happiness. But unlike Dungeon Keeper if you don’t keep up your creatures
demands they actually go on strike.
The visuals in Dungeons 3 are gorgeous, it’s amazing the
difference it makes playing a game made within the last 10 years. The visuals
are cartoonish in a charmful way from the characters to the monsters the character
design is beautiful. There are several ridiculous characters throughout this
game and many of them turn out to be surprisingly charming. However, one character
is the best and spoiler it’s The Narrator. The Narrator has the best script in
this game his offhanded comments and humour feel nostalgic when thinking of the
wit in Dungeon Keeper.
I loved this game, and I am now making my way through the DLC’s,
and I have been debating getting Dungeons 4. If you loved Dungeon Keeper I
think you’ll like this game.
