A Forest of Vanity and Valour by A.P Beswick Review

Hello Readers,

I discovered A.P Beswick when I was on TikTok I used to sit in his lives while typing up reviews. This Robin Hood retelling was brilliant, and I loved every second of it.

Synopsis:

An aggressive debt collector banished from the kingdom. Now his life depends on his ability to help the less fortunate… Vireo Reinhold relishes collecting his monarch’s proper dues. Working hard to prolong and fund the king’s never-ending war, the self-centred official revels in the perks of luxury that come with his unorthodox role. But his world upends when he unearths an ancient spell book that promises to unlock a shadowy, forgotten magic.

Embroiled in a secret affair with a fellow noble’s wife, Vireo is mortified when he’s forced to commit an unthinkable act. Driven into exile, no longer able to coerce the vulnerable, and with the powerful tome in his enemy’s hands, the fallen agent’s only shot at survival hangs on his skills at saving others. Can Vireo redeem himself as the people’s champion before they all fall to a sinister fate?

Miniature Review
I loved the legend of Robin Hood while I was growing up, I loved the Disney movie and The Robin Hood Series on BBC. However, it was nice to see a darker take on the robin hood legend. I loved the spin A.P. put on his darker retelling of the Robin Hood legend. Pair this with incredible world building and well-developed characters, I mean what’s not to love.

I was so absorbed in the story that I found myself reading it in one sitting, it was a nice quick read. This is a fast-paced story of vengeance, the cat and mouse chase that we love from the orginal legend, with a sprinkle of magic and mystical creatures. One thing I will say is that the story has a lot of potential to explore in future books. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun fantasy read.
