Hello Readers,
This is the first book from my new roll for TBR series. Mina and the undead is one of the books I’m kicking myself for leaving on my TBR. Slight spoiler dear Reader but I loved this book and had ordered the other two books in the series before I finished the book.
Hands up all my fellow 90s babies this book if for us. The book cover is themed after a VHS tape that we used to rent; it even has the be kind rewind sticker on it. I mean the nostalgia just from the cover but within these pages. There are so many references to films we watched or became obsessed with in out teens like “Interview with a vampire,” “IT,” “The Lost Boys”, “Elvira” there’s too many to mention. Yes, its YA but the nostalgia.
I will try and not make this review sound like a giant love letter, but I don’t its going to happen. I’ve been in a reading slump and I this book pulled me out of it. But I can’t deny that I honestly loved everything about this book from the characters, the atmosphere, the writing and I was here for all the pop culture references. Teenage me would have devoured and loved this book and 31-year-old me loved it for her.
If you are looking for a fun, fast paced story about vampires that’s hits you right in the nostalgia this is the book. It a great debut novel and a must read for any 90’s horror fan. I love that this book is set New Orleans and how the book covers New Orleans mythology. We have mentions of the Axeman of New Orleans, Delphine LaLaurie and of course vampires. If I didn’t have my allergy disorder I would want to get on a plane and explore the place for myself with this book in hand.
I am going to spend this weekend reading books two and three cause if you can’t tell by my review, I’m a little obsessed.
