Happy Spooky Season Readers,
I was a little late to the party on this book considering it came out in 2020. Apparently, this spooky season I am feeling nostalgic, and I will say that I might be a little bias as I grew up watching 80’s and 90’s slasher films and this book fits right into that category.
I am split with two good opinions of this book. On one side this book feels like running around Scarefest, doing horror mazes and going on rides in the dark. While on the other hand this book this book gave me same vibes of classic slasher horror movies from the 80’s and 90’s. For me, this book read like a classic slasher film I mean Clowns with machetes, Clowns with chainsaws like its feeds into the pennywise fear. Although I never got the Pennywise fear its wither Frankie from Rocky Horror or a Sarsgaard.
Adam fully embraces all the tropes that made 80's and 90’s slasher movies so great but he also manages to throw in a few modern twists. Adam has this incredible knack for nailing each gory scene without being too over the top. In some horror books gore can be taken slightly too far. However, Adam walks the very fine line of writing scenes that disgusts without going too far, but still somehow manged keep the thrill aspect bubbling underneath.
Each character was well thought out and I was rooting for so many to survive but you know slasher. Adam effortlessly manged to write genuine fear in his characters and made it an intense experience for me as a reader. Unless you have Coulrophobia this book is filled to brim with Halloween vibes and the writing is so vivid with its imagery of cornfields and Autumn. Which made this book pure fun and exactly what I wanted to read heading into the spooky season.
If this book ever gets a screen adaption, I will happily be
one of the first in line.
