Hello Readers,
You might be surprised to see that I enjoy A Christmas Carol and I have seen a fair few adaptions. I thought I would share some of my favourites with you. Also, just a little side note I prefer to call myself a Grinch not a Scrooge, because I don’t like Christmas till my heart grows three sizes too big and I’m not as mean as Scrooge about it.
I am using poster images I have found through google I do not own any rights and am using the image purely for review purposes (Fair use under the copyright act sections 29 and 30 under use for a review).
Mickey’s Christmas
Carol (1983)
If you haven't seen this classic yet you’re missing out on something that's just as special as any other Christmas film. The old Scrooge McDuck was made to play the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the new duck tails version not so much he’s a lot nicer now days. Mickey plays an excellent Bob Cratchit and obviously Minnie makes a great Mrs. Cratchit. Donald Duck portrays Fred and Goofy is Jacob Marley. Jiminy Cricket, Willy the Giant and Pete all make amazing ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. This is one of my favourite versions of a Christmas Carol and Mother Goose and I never fail to watch it during the festive season.
Scrooged (1988)
Scrooged has a rebellious feel about it It's different enough from the source material but still has similarities. Its genuinely funny, has a great cast clearly enjoy themselves and there are many stars are in this movie many who are sadly no longer with us. I like the creative liberties they took with crafting the ghosts and appreciate the actual ties to Christmas Carol. This movie an iconic 80s Christmas movie and a pretty good movie overall. This movie acts as a reminder about how precious and special life can be.
Blackadder's Christmas Carol (1988)
The image of Baldrick in Christmas future is burned into my brain. Ebenezer Blackadder is the nicest, most entirely selfless man in the whole of England! But don`t worry, in this reworking of Dickens Christmas Carol Blackadder soon turns into the antihero we all know and hate. A visit from Robbie Coltrane (RIP) as the ghost of Christmas who decided to visit someone who's already nice for a change, shows Blackadder the naughty behaviour of some of his ancestors and a glimpse into the future. But Ebenezer gets the wrong end of the stick, and you can sense the delight as he realises "Bad guys have all the fun!".
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Somehow despite being a huge Disney fan growing up I saw The Muppet Christmas Carol before I saw the Disney version. This is one of my favourite muppet movies this and Treasure Island are tied in first place. Michael Caine was wonderful as Scrooge and the only real human person. Gonzo and Rizzo are the narrators for this version and their comedic antics throughout the film worked well for me. I also think that the Muppets on the whole do add to the story and provide a unique comedic take on the classic tale. I still love the songs, all the nostalgic feelings, the laughs, everything about this movie I just love it all so much.
Spirited (2022)
I will keep this spoiler free. I liked this reinvention
of the story of A Christmas Carol. In the world of Spirited, Dickens' one-off
haunting has become an annual event. Each Christmas, an entire industry of
cheery, headset-wearing spectres must select a new Scrooge to undergo a
redeeming journey into their past, present, and future. Who knew we needed A
Christmas Carol told from the ghosts' perspective.
